I am browsing through my new photo book full of pictures from Edinburgh and thinking about that precious time I spent there. After one week in the capital city of Edinburgh /ˈɛdɪnbəɹə/ - how the locals do pronounce it, I was really captivated by the country and people living there who hold a special place in my heart. More special than other countries I have visited so far. Do you want to know why?
It had all started before last Christmas. My friend Michal and I decided to try something new. We wanted to travel and explore new places. We wanted to share our experiences from the world of photography, to have lots of fun and of course, to take some new creative photos and shoot some good videos. We bought the first flight tickets we had found on the Internet and our new adventure in Edinburgh was about to start. Our flight was all right. We went through the last airport control and got to our hostel by public transport. We were really shocked! The lady at the reception started talking to us in a weird English dialect. We had no idea what she was saying. After a while, we kind of started to understand her and got a place to stay overnight. We were looking forward to the next morning for a really long time. It was our first day in Edinburgh!
Of course, we were taking pictures all the time: macros, portraits, photos of some old beautiful buildings, ordinary lives of people and feelings. The reason I like photography is that you can capture and display the soul and the deepness of the place. A person who has never been there can experience the same feelings I had while visiting such places. I also admired the town architecture and had discovered many interesting places. In the third night, after we took our night walk across the city and took many creative photos, we came back to our hostel. There was a surprise waiting for us. Some people staying in the same place were having a gathering to get to know each other better. We were just passing by when suddenly someone asked us to join them and talk a little. We were really tired after a long day, but we decided to stay.
Now I know that it was the best decision we could make. We didn't sleep much, but we definitely had a great time and got a chance to make new friends from all around the world while playing cards, talking and learning Spanish. My friend Michal, who is skilful magician, was performing tricks. We were very tired but it was an unforgettable night. The next day we needed loads of coffee just to stay awake. We met our friends from Slovakia who are studying there and got some interesting information about the Scottish school system. Our next night was really similar to the previous one.
The next day we wanted to take a little break and decided to leave the town with its old buildings for a while. We decided to go to nature to get some rest. We went there early in the morning together with other 14 guys and our guide Ally. He was a super cool, ceaselessly talking guy and we had so much fun with him! I love British humour. Besides that, we learned many interesting things about Scotland's history. Ally was fascinated by music and knew the history of every pop-rock band from the 90s. He was playing us motivational music or music related to the scenery behind the window of our van. We have stopped several times to admire the beauty of Scotland’s nature. We have seen the second largest lake of Scotland – Loch Ness, which, according to Ally can be seen from space. We had a chance to see hairy cows typical for Scotland, also called Highland Cows. I'm not sure whether they are able to see anything through the long hair covering their eyes. The wonderful day of exploring and walking across the frozen country was coming to its end. In the evening, we had a good time playing cards at the hostel again.
I have always been interested in exploring new places, but in Scotland, this hobby became my addiction. After a couple of days in the city I have spent with people from New Zealand, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Italy, I came to realize one thing. Travelling is not only about interesting and beautiful places, not only about the photos we can take home with us, but it is mainly about meeting new people and gaining new experiences with them. The people who share their passion with you, the people you share your experiences with. The people who have been through a lot and decided to live their lives a different way.
That is why Edinburgh won such a great piece of my heart. I'm at home, looking at the pictures in my computer or I browse through my photo book. It touches me every time. Not only because of the wonderful places I have visited but especially because of all those amazing people I had chance to meet during this fantastic trip! I think this makes my experiences unforgettable. It would not be so great if I would just go there on my own, took a few pictures and left without taking “the important” with me. It is essential to have someone to travel with. I'm thankful that I could share this amazing trip with a guy I really get on well with. We had a really good time together as we understand and support each other. It was fun! Such people make travelling significant.
